Isaac Asimov's Foundation series is one of the most celebrated works in science fiction literature. The series began with short stories published in Astounding Magazine in the 1940s and expanded into a comprehensive universe spanning multiple decades of writing.
The Original Foundation Trilogy
The original trilogy (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation) won the Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series" in 1966, beating out J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. These books introduced the revolutionary concept of psychohistory and established Asimov as a master of science fiction.
Expanded Universe
Later in his career, Asimov expanded the series with prequels and sequels, and cleverly connected his Robot and Empire series into the same universe. This created an interconnected narrative spanning 20,000 years of future history, making it one of the most ambitious projects in science fiction literature.
