Synopsis
Golan Trevize, still unsatisfied with his choice of Galaxia, continues his search for Earth to understand why he made that decision. Accompanied by Janov Pelorat and the Gaian woman Bliss, Trevize visits several abandoned Spacer worlds from the distant Robot era — including Aurora, Solaria, and Melpomenia.
On Solaria, they encounter the descendants of the original Spacer colonists, who have evolved into hermaphroditic beings with powerful telekinetic abilities. Finally reaching Earth — now radioactive and uninhabitable — they discover the Moon, where the ancient robot R. Daneel Olivaw has been operating for 20,000 years.
Daneel reveals that he created Gaia, guided the development of psychohistory, and has been subtly steering humanity's course throughout all of history. He needs to merge with a human to survive, and Trevize realizes this is why he chose Galaxia — to protect humanity from an unknown external threat that Daneel senses but cannot identify.

Historical Context & Writing Background
Published in 1986, this novel serves as the grand unification of Asimov's three major series. Through the character of R. Daneel Olivaw — who first appeared in 'The Caves of Steel' (1954) — Asimov retroactively connected 14 novels spanning Robot, Empire, and Foundation into a single 20,000-year narrative.
Critical Reception
Reviews were mixed. The unification of Asimov's universes was praised as ambitious, but some critics felt the travelogue structure was less compelling than the political intrigue of earlier books. The ending — with Daneel needing to merge with a human child — left many questions unanswered, and Asimov never wrote the planned sequel.
Connection to Asimov's Universe
This is the chronological endpoint of the entire Asimov universe. R. Daneel Olivaw's presence connects directly to 'The Caves of Steel,' 'The Naked Sun,' 'The Robots of Dawn,' 'Robots and Empire,' and the Foundation prequels. The radioactive Earth was first established in 'Pebble in the Sky' (1950).
