Synopsis

Spanning roughly 30 years, the novel follows an aging Hari Seldon as he completes his life's work. The story is told through four connected novellas, each showing a different crisis Seldon must navigate while perfecting psychohistory and establishing the Foundations.

Seldon loses everything he holds dear: his wife Dors Venabili is destroyed defending him, his adopted son Raych is killed, and his beloved granddaughter Wanda — who possesses mentalic abilities — becomes the nucleus of the Second Foundation. Meanwhile, the Galactic Empire continues its irreversible decline around him.

The novel ends with the elderly Seldon, now alone and forgotten, recording holoprojections for future Seldon Crises. He dies peacefully, knowing his two Foundations are in place. The final scene mirrors the opening of the original 'Foundation,' completing the circle.

Connection to Asimov's Universe

This novel directly bridges the gap between 'Prelude to Foundation' and the original 'Foundation.' Wanda Seldon's mentalic abilities establish the origin of the Second Foundation. The final chapter connects seamlessly to the beginning of 'Foundation.'
