The Four Kingdoms
When the Galactic Empire withdrew from the Periphery, the region splintered into small independent kingdoms. The four closest to Terminus — Anacreon, Smyrno, Korell, and others — immediately began competing for dominance. This fragmentation was precisely what psychohistory had predicted.
Smyrno was among the most aggressive of these kingdoms, rivaling Anacreon in military ambition. Had the Four Kingdoms ever united against Terminus, the Foundation might have been destroyed. But their mutual distrust — expertly exploited by Salvor Hardin — kept them divided.
Role in the Seldon Plan
Smyrno's primary role in the Foundation saga is as part of the competitive ecosystem that drove the first Seldon Crisis. The existence of multiple rival kingdoms meant that the Foundation could not simply be conquered — any kingdom that tried would be vulnerable to attack from the others.
This balance of power gave Salvor Hardin the breathing room he needed to establish the Foundation's technological and religious influence over all the kingdoms simultaneously.
