Season Overview

Season 2 jumps forward roughly 150 years, with the Foundation now established as a significant power. The Genetic Dynasty faces internal crisis as Brother Dawn's genetic deviation threatens the entire cloning system.

Gaal Dornick and Salvor Hardin, reunited on Synnax, set out to find Hari Seldon, whose consciousness is trapped inside the Prime Radiant. Their search leads to the water world of Ignis, home to Tellem Bond and a hidden community of mentalics. The season explores the origins of the Second Foundation and Gaal's growing psychic abilities.

The season balances political intrigue on Trantor, where Brother Day's assault on Terminus ends in disaster for the Genetic Dynasty, with the more intimate storylines of Hari, Gaal, and Salvor on Ignis. Salvor is killed in the finale, and Hari and Gaal agree to enter cryosleep, waking each year to train the Second Foundation for the crisis to come.

Season 2 Episode Guide

Foundation Season 2 premiered on Apple TV+ on July 14, 2023, with new episodes releasing weekly on Fridays. It consists of 10 episodes, concluding on September 15, 2023. The season is set approximately 150 years after Season 1 and adapts elements of Foundation and Empire while introducing significant original storylines.

Season Overview: The Foundation is established and growing. Gaal Dornick and Salvor Hardin, reunited on Synnax, search for Hari Seldon, whose consciousness is trapped inside the Prime Radiant. On the water world of Ignis, they encounter Tellem Bond and a community of mentalics. On Trantor, Brother Dawn's genetic deviation creates a succession crisis. The season ends with Salvor's death, and with Hari and Gaal entering cryosleep, waking once a year to train the Second Foundation for the Mule's arrival 152 years later.

New cast additions: Ella-Rae Smith as Queen Sareth, Ben Daniels as Bel Riose, Kulvinder Ghir as Poly Verisof, Rachel House as Tellem Bond, Dimitri Leonidas as Hober Mallow.

Episode 1: "In Seldon's Shadow"

Air Date: July 14, 2023 · Directed by Alex Graves · Written by David S. Goyer & Jane Espenson

More than a century later, a copy of Seldon's mind is trapped inside the Prime Radiant, trying to find a way out. On Synnax, Gaal and Salvor study the Radiant, learn that the Plan is drifting off course, and work to get Salvor's ship, the Beggar, flying again. On Trantor, the current Brother Day survives an assassination attempt by a sect called the Blind Angels and proposes marriage to Queen Sareth of the Cloud Dominion, a match meant to end the cloning line. She is not impressed. The Empire also discovers that Terminus was never destroyed after all. By the end of the episode, Seldon has escaped the Radiant and is waiting for Gaal and Salvor aboard the Beggar.

Book connection: The time jump mirrors the book's habit of leaping forward generations, but a Seldon who lives inside the Prime Radiant is the show's invention. In Second Foundation, the Prime Radiant is simply the device that displays the Plan's equations.

Episode 2: "A Glimpse of Darkness"

Air Date: July 21, 2023 · Directed by David S. Goyer · Written by Jane Espenson & David S. Goyer

Seldon tells Gaal and Salvor that a Second Foundation is essential, and that the plan to start one was derailed when Gaal fled. They escape Synnax just ahead of enormous storm waves. On the world of Siwenna, the Foundation clerics Poly Verisof and Brother Constant learn that the Vault on Terminus has reopened and race home; the Warden who approaches it is burned to death, and the name "Hober Mallow" appears. Looking 150 years ahead, Gaal is attacked in a vision by a telepath called the Mule, and sees Salvor dead beside her. From her future self she learns where the Second Foundation belongs: the planet Ignis.

Book connection: Poly Verisof is Salvor Hardin's ambassador-priest in "The Mayors," and Siwenna is the old Imperial province of Foundation and Empire. The Mule arrives in the show as a threat seen from 150 years away.

Episode 3: "King and Commoner"

Air Date: July 28, 2023 · Directed by David S. Goyer · Written by Leigh Dana Jackson & Jane Espenson

Demerzel frees General Bel Riose from a prison colony to investigate the Foundation, and reunites him with his husband, Glawen Curr, before he leads a fleet to the Outer Reach. Seldon takes Gaal and Salvor to Oona's World, an abandoned mining planet, where a mysterious woman named Kalle transfers his mind into a living body; old mining machines attack the Beggar as they leave. On Korell, the con man and master trader Hober Mallow uses a teleportation device to steal the Eye of Korell from Commdor Argo, is caught, sentenced to death, and escapes in the ship that Poly and Constant brought to plead for him.

Book connection: Bel Riose, the last great Imperial general, is the hero-villain of "The General" in Foundation and Empire. Hober Mallow and Commdor Asper Argo come from "The Merchant Princes" in Foundation, but the book's Mallow is a patient strategist, not a thief. See our full profile of Hober Mallow.

Episode 4: "Where the Stars are Scattered Thinly"

Air Date: August 4, 2023 · Directed by Mark Tonderai · Written by Leigh Dana Jackson & David S. Goyer

Sareth and Brother Dawn find they can trust each other, while Brother Dusk grows close to Rue, one of Sareth's companions. Riose and Glawen slip into Siwenna to meet an informant, Ducem Barr, who tells them about the Foundation's "Magicians" and their technology; Barr takes poison rather than be captured. Poly, Constant, and Mallow reach Terminus and meet Seldon's image in the Vault. Seldon tells the clerics to seek peace with the Empire and gives Mallow different orders. Sareth quietly starts investigating how her family died.

Book connection: Ducem Barr is lifted straight from "The General," where he is the old Siwennan patrician who explains psychohistory to Riose. In the book he survives; the show gives him a much darker exit.

Episode 5: "The Sighted and the Seen"

Air Date: August 11, 2023 · Directed by Alex Graves · Written by Joelle Garfinkel & Jane Espenson

Seldon wakes in his new body and faces a vision of Raych. The Beggar crash-lands on Ignis. On Trantor, Sareth is caught searching the Emperor's bedchamber and ends up accepting his proposal; later she and Rue discover that Demerzel is a robot. On Ignis, Salvor seems to find her long-lost partner Hugo, but he turns out to be a telepath, and Seldon, Gaal, and Salvor are captured and brought to Tellem Bond, leader of a refuge for mentalics who already knows about their plan.

Book connection: Demerzel's secret echoes the prequels, where Eto Demerzel is the robot R. Daneel Olivaw in disguise. Tellem Bond and the mentalics of Ignis are the show's own route to the Second Foundation.

Episode 6: "Why the Gods Made Wine"

Air Date: August 18, 2023 · Directed by Alex Graves · Story by David S. Goyer · Teleplay by Jane Espenson

Tellem offers Gaal training and eventual leadership of the mentalics, on the condition that she choose them over Seldon. Seldon seems to leave the planet after an argument, but Tellem has trapped him in a tidal pool to drown; as the water rises, he remembers his early life on Helicon and his partner Yanna, killed by the Empire. On Trantor, Sareth upstages Brother Day in front of the crowd. Mallow follows Seldon's coordinates to a Spacer mothership, and on Trantor, Poly and Constant are arrested.

Book connection: Seldon's Helicon past is canon from Prelude to Foundation, but Yanna is invented; the book's Seldon marries Dors Venabili. The Spacers are borrowed from Asimov's Robot novels, reimagined as an oppressed people.

Episode 7: "A Necessary Death"

Air Date: August 25, 2023 · Directed by Mark Tonderai · Written by Eric Carrasco & David Kob

Sareth confirms that Brother Day was behind the murder of her family. Mallow offers the Spacers freedom from the Empire, but they hand him to Riose, and he escapes by showing off the Foundation's jump technology. Riose considers defying the Emperor and decides not to. Sareth asks Dawn, not Day, to father her child. At court, Constant carries a hidden interface of Seldon that confronts the Emperor, who responds by ordering a blockade of Terminus. On Ignis, Salvor finds Seldon's drowned body, and Tellem knocks her unconscious.

Book connection: The general who is tempted to turn on his emperor is the core of "The General," where Cleon II recalls Riose precisely because he fears a successful general more than he fears the Foundation.

Episode 8: "The Last Empress"

Air Date: September 1, 2023 · Directed by Roxann Dawson · Written by Liz Phang & Addie Manis & Bob Oltra

Dusk suspects Rue of plotting against Day. Mallow's ship bursts in on the clerics' execution, rescuing Constant but leaving Poly behind, and Brother Day nearly dies. Day decides to take the fleet to Terminus himself. On Ignis, Salvor makes contact with the Seldon in the Vault, who helps her escape, while Tellem prepares to move her mind into Gaal's body. Dusk and Rue find a hidden chamber behind a palace mural, where an image of Cleon I offers to tell them where Demerzel came from.

Episode 9: "Long Ago, Not Far Away"

Air Date: September 8, 2023 · Directed by Roxann Dawson · Written by Jane Espenson & Eric Carrasco

A flashback 610 years into the past shows the young Cleon I discovering Demerzel, imprisoned in the palace for thousands of years; he frees her, but programs her to serve the Empire. In the present, the image of Cleon I traps Dusk and Rue in the same chamber. On Ignis, Salvor rescues Gaal from Tellem, and Seldon, who survived after all, kills Tellem. On Terminus, Brother Day orders the Church of Seldon's priests executed and, when the Foundation fights back, drops the Invictus onto the planet, destroying it.

Book connection: Demerzel's backstory has no equivalent in Asimov. The Seldon Plan's survival through a planet's destruction is also the show's own twist, since the book's Terminus is never destroyed.

Episode 10: "Creation Myths" [Season Finale]

Air Date: September 15, 2023 · Directed by Alex Graves · Written by David S. Goyer & Liz Phang

Brother Day orders the fleet to destroy the Foundation's allies. Riose refuses and is relieved of command, and a Spacer sabotages the fleet's jump so that the Imperial ships crash into one another. Mallow saves Constant by ejecting her in a small pod before his own ship is lost. On Trantor, Demerzel kills Dusk and Rue, Dawn escapes with the pregnant Sareth, and Demerzel decants a new set of clones. Constant's pod turns out to carry the whole population of Terminus, saved in the Vault. On Ignis, Tellem's mind survives in a follower who tries to kill Gaal; Salvor stops him and dies. Seldon and Gaal go into cryosleep, planning to wake once a year to train the Second Foundation. 152 years later, the Mule senses Gaal.

Book connection: Riose's fall and the Empire turning on its own best general close out the "General" storyline in spirit, if not in detail. Salvor's death, like Gaal's, belongs to the show alone.

Season 2 Assessment

Season 2 is more confident than Season 1 in its characters and less confident in its plotting. The Ignis storyline takes longer to develop than it needs to, and Tellem Bond is a villain whose menace doesn't quite match the show's investment in her. The Bel Riose storyline, by contrast, is among the best things the show has ever done — Ben Daniels brings the tragedy of a brilliant man serving a dying institution with real emotional intelligence.

The season's final episode sets up Season 3 effectively. The transition from Foundation survival story to Mule threat story is the biggest tonal shift the series has attempted, and the finale makes that shift feel earned.
