Foundation: Season 1

Foundation Season 1 premiered on Apple TV+ on September 24, 2021, with two episodes released simultaneously and one new episode each Friday thereafter. The season's 10 episodes ran through November 19, 2021, loosely adapting the opening of Asimov's Foundation (1951) while adding substantial original material.

This guide covers all ten episodes in detail: what happens, how it connects to the books, and what each episode contributes to the season's larger argument.

Season Overview: Hari Seldon predicts the Galactic Empire's fall. He is tried for treason and exiled to Terminus with his followers, who go on to build the Foundation without him. Meanwhile, the Genetic Dynasty of Emperor Cleon (Brother Dawn, Brother Day, Brother Dusk) faces challenges to its legitimacy.

Episode 1: "The Emperor's Peace"

Gaal Dornick grows up on Synnax, a water world whose church treats mathematics as heresy. Solving a famous unsolved conjecture wins her a place with Hari Seldon on Trantor, the planet-wide capital of the Empire. Within a day of arriving, she and Seldon are both arrested. The Empire expects Gaal to testify that his predictions are wrong. She checks his math instead, confirms it, and condemns them both. Then the Star Bridge, Trantor's space elevator, is brought down in an apparent terrorist attack, and Emperor Brother Day spares Seldon, exiling him and his followers to the remote world of Terminus to build a "Foundation."

Book connection: The outline follows "The Psychohistorians," the opening section of Foundation: a young mathematician arrives on Trantor, Seldon stands trial, and the Empire exiles his project to Terminus. Almost everything around that outline is new. In the book, Seldon's judges are the Commission of Public Safety under Linge Chen, not a trio of cloned emperors, and there is no Star Bridge.

What this episode establishes: The show's biggest invention, the Genetic Dynasty of Cleon clones, and its willingness to turn Asimov's quiet opening into spectacle.

Episode 2: "Preparing to Live"

The exiles set out for Terminus aboard the slow ship Deliverance. A year into the voyage, Gaal, now the lover of Seldon's adopted son Raych, tells him she has found a gap in Seldon's model. On Trantor, the investigation cannot prove who destroyed the Star Bridge, but Brother Day executes the delegations of Anacreon and Thespis anyway and bombs their home worlds, ignoring Brother Dusk's plea for mercy. Aboard the ship, Gaal walks in on Raych stabbing Seldon to death. Raych pushes her into an escape pod, with the knife, and launches her into space.

Book connection: None of this happens in the novels. Asimov's Seldon never leaves Trantor, and dies there of old age. His adopted son Raych belongs to the prequels, where he dies long before the exile. The bombing of Anacreon and Thespis becomes the source of the Anacreon grudge the show uses later in the season.

Episode 3: "The Mathematician's Ghost"

On Trantor, nineteen years after the attack, the dynasty goes through its ritual succession: a new Brother Dawn is decanted, the old Brother Dusk becomes Brother Darkness and is put to death. In flashback, the colonists reach Terminus and find the Vault, a floating artifact surrounded by a field that drives every living thing away. Decades later, the Foundation is established and Salvor Hardin, a second-generation colonist, is its Warden. The Vault's field has started to grow, and Anacreon warships appear overhead. Chasing a child into the old Deliverance, Salvor finds herself surrounded by an Anacreon landing party.

Book connection: Salvor Hardin is the hero of "The Encyclopedists" and "The Mayors," but in the book he is a male politician and mayor of Terminus City, not a Warden who carries a rifle. The Vault is a much stranger version of the book's Time Vault, where Seldon's recordings play at each crisis.

Episode 4: "Barbarians at the Gate"

Air Date: October 8, 2021 · Directed by Alex Graves · Written by Lauren Bello

On Trantor, the dynasty's legitimacy is under attack. Zephyr Halima, a candidate to lead the dominant Luminist faith, revives an old teaching that clones have no souls, and riots break out in the ruined lower levels of the city: two of the warning signs Seldon listed at his trial. Brother Day leaves for the Luminist conclave to back a friendlier candidate, while Brother Dusk sends Commander Dorwin to find out why the Foundation has gone silent. On Terminus, Salvor outwits the invaders and captures their leader, the Grand Huntress Phara Keaen, who claims Anacreon only wants the colony ship's navigation computer. In deep space, a ship finds Gaal's escape pod.

Book connection: Anacreon's pressure on Terminus is the first Seldon Crisis in Foundation, and "Lord Dorwin," the Empire's useless envoy, is a borrowed name from "The Encyclopedists." The religious challenge to the clones is the show's own.

Episode 5: "Upon Awakening"

Air Date: October 15, 2021 · Directed by Alex Graves · Written by Leigh Dana Jackson

Flashbacks show why Gaal left Synnax: she was forced to take part in the execution of her teacher for saving books, and taught herself in secret until she could enter the competition that took her off-world. In the present she wakes from 34 years of cryosleep aboard an automated ship, the Raven, which Raych had prepared. Raych was executed for Seldon's murder, and the galaxy thinks she was his accomplice. Then she finds Seldon aboard, wounded but apparently alive. On Terminus, Dorwin's ship arrives, Phara escapes, and she reveals her real motive: revenge on the Empire, whose bombing of Anacreon killed her family. Anacreon troops storm the city and shoot down the Imperial ship.

Book connection: Gaal's cryosleep, and the idea of a hero who skips across the centuries, is the show's device for keeping one face on screen while Asimov's story jumps forward decades at a time.

Episode 6: "Death and the Maiden"

Air Date: October 22, 2021 · Directed by Jennifer Phang · Written by Marcus Gardley

Brother Day visits the Luminists' holy moon, the Maiden, and tries to buy goodwill, but Zephyr Halima wins the crowd with a eulogy that quietly questions Imperial cloning. On Trantor, the young Brother Dawn falls for a palace gardener, Azura, and admits a dangerous secret: he is colorblind, a flaw no earlier Cleon had. On Terminus, the Anacreons pull Dorwin from the wreck and force colonists to help them revive the Invictus, a lost Imperial warship. Salvor's father Abbas dies destroying the Anacreon ships, and Salvor and her partner Hugo are forced to fly Phara's party to the Invictus.

Book connection: The Invictus is a spectacular expansion of a small detail in "The Mayors," where Anacreon finds a derelict Imperial battle cruiser and demands that the Foundation repair it.

Episode 7: "Mysteries and Martyrs"

Air Date: October 29, 2021 · Directed by Jennifer Phang · Written by Caitlin Saunders

The boarding of the Invictus goes badly: Hugo is lost during a spacewalk and Phara kills Dorwin once he has unlocked the ship. Brother Day tries to outdo Halima by walking the Spiral, Luminism's most punishing pilgrimage, while Brother Dawn considers running away with Azura. Aboard the Raven, the "living" Seldon turns out to be a digital copy of his mind, stored in the knife Raych used. He explains the plan Gaal and Raych's romance disrupted: Seldon was supposed to die and become a legend, and Gaal was supposed to lead the Foundation. He also tells Gaal she can sense the future.

Book connection: A dead Seldon who keeps talking is a clever expansion of the book's Time Vault recordings, but the show's Seldon can argue back. Gaal's intuition is an early step toward the show's version of the Second Foundation's mental powers.

Episode 8: "The Missing Piece"

The Invictus jumps into the unknown with Salvor and Phara fighting on its bridge. Seldon's copy tells Gaal the ship is taking her to Helicon, where a second Foundation was meant to begin; she refuses to be managed again, takes an escape pod, and sets a course home to Synnax, a trip that will take 138 years. Brother Day finishes the Spiral and claims a sacred vision, which forces the Luminists to accept that clones have souls. He then orders Demerzel, a devout Luminist, to kill Halima. On the way home he admits to himself that he saw nothing.

Book connection: The idea of a second, hidden Foundation is Asimov's, but where to put it is exactly the question the trilogy turns into its central mystery.

Episode 9: "The First Crisis"

Air Date: November 12, 2021 · Directed by Roxann Dawson · Written by Victoria Morrow

Lewis Pirenne sacrifices himself to bring the Invictus back to Terminus. Salvor goes down to shut off the Vault, whose field has knocked out the whole planet. On Trantor, Dawn tries to flee with Azura and walks into a conspiracy: her group had altered his genes so that he would run, planning to replace him with a compliant double. Brother Dusk crushes the plot. On Terminus, Salvor unlocks the Vault and proposes that Anacreon, Thespis, and Terminus share the Invictus as leverage against the Empire. Phara tries to destroy the Vault and is shot, and Hari Seldon steps out of it.

Book connection: In Foundation, Lewis Pirenne is the pompous chairman of the Board of Trustees whom Hardin pushes aside. The episode's title points at the book's first Seldon Crisis, which Hardin solves with diplomacy rather than a battle.

Episode 10: "The Leap" [Season Finale]

A second copy of Seldon explains that the Vault was his coffin, sent ahead of the colonists. The Foundation's true purpose was never the encyclopedia; it was to build a new civilization with Anacreon and Thespis, hidden from the Empire by making Terminus look dead. Salvor learns that she is the daughter of Gaal and Raych, which explains her visions, and leaves to find her mother. On Trantor, Brother Day spares Dawn, but Demerzel kills him anyway, and Day learns that the conspirators tampered with Cleon I's genes long ago, so every clone, including himself, is flawed. Gaal reaches the ruins of Synnax, finds a second pod in the sea, and wakes Salvor.

Book connection: Seldon's message is the show's version of the famous Time Vault scene in "The Encyclopedists," where Seldon tells the Foundation that the encyclopedia was a fraud all along.

Season 1 Assessment

Season 1 succeeds at its main task: establishing a universe worth returning to. The Trantor storyline (Genetic Dynasty) is stronger than the Terminus storyline in most episodes — Lee Pace's Brother Day is compulsively watchable in a way that the Terminus plot can't quite match until Salvor's character fully develops.

The show's fidelity to Asimov's ideas — the Fall of Empires, the Seldon Plan, the role of science in preservation — is high even when its fidelity to specific plot points is low. It's an adaptation that trusts the source material's themes while freely reinventing the specific events.

Season 2 premiere: July 14, 2023
